The numbers on paper don’t look like much, but they tell the story of a country stepping onto the Streetlifting stage for the very first time, and doing it with a level of ambition that punched well above its size. Organized entirely by Silverbacks Academy at Aveo Functional, the Guatemalan Open 2026 was exactly what a debut should be: modest in scale, significant in impact, and built by people who understood that someone has to go first.
Event Overview
Running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the event was planned, organized, and executed from start to finish by Silverbacks Academy and their judging team. The competition was streamed live, giving the wider Central American Streetlifting community a window into what was, for many of the nine athletes on the platform, their first experience competing under official rules and structured judging.
For a first edition, the objective was never about the size of the field. It was about proving that Streetlifting could exist in Guatemala as a properly organized, credible branch of the sport, and giving the local calisthenics community something concrete to build toward.
Highlights and Athletes Performance
The competition delivered far beyond what its small scale might suggest. In the -80kg category, Jorge Gabriel Ortiz set two new Central American records in a single day: a 92.5kg pull-up and a 38.5kg muscle-up, performances that immediately placed his name on the regional map.
In the -66kg class, Raul Furlan matched that ambition with a 118kg dip, also a new Central American record, rounding out a day where the record books in Guatemala were rewritten from scratch.
Beyond the records, the event also produced a result with direct competitive consequences: two athletes secured qualification for the Americas, giving Guatemala its first representation at that level and a clear marker of what this scene is capable of producing even in its earliest stage.
Organizational Insights
Running a first-ever competition in a country with no prior Streetlifting infrastructure comes with obstacles that established scenes rarely have to think about. The most significant was equipment: Guatemala currently has no access to calibrated competition plates, forcing the organizers to work around a limitation that more developed scenes take for granted.
The FinalRep registration process also proved challenging in a market still building its competitive culture. A significant number of athletes signed up informally without completing payment, creating last-minute uncertainty about the final field and adding pressure during execution on competition day.
Despite these constraints, the team delivered an event that left athletes genuinely happy and thankful for the experience. Looking ahead, the priorities for improvement are clear: a dedicated livestream setup and a new venue better suited to the format, both concrete steps toward a more polished second edition.
Community Response & Future Outlook
The response from the small but engaged crowd was warm and appreciative, with athletes expressing genuine gratitude for the opportunity to compete in a structured, judged environment for the first time. As the organizers put it themselves:
„This is just the beginning.“
The plan for next year is already taking shape: both All-4 and Classic format competitions, opening the door specifically to beginners, intermediate athletes, juniors, and sub-juniors, a clear strategy to grow the base of the sport from the ground up rather than chase scale too quickly.
